What does astrology mean & How its Works?
Astrology is a term we use in English. Wondering what does astrology mean in Hindi? In Hindi, it is being called “Jyotish”. Astrology is basically a science to study the movements of planets or/other heavenly bodies influencing the circumstances and outcomes of efforts in someone’s life.
In India, people trust on astrology for variety of reasons or while taking important decisions of their lives, like marriage or buying a property or naming a child at the time of birth in the family. Yet, there is a section of people who questions the validity of astrology and often ask, what is astrology?
As we all know, people approach an astrologer who can see into the planetary positions and their movements and their effects on people’s lives. In vedic astrology, which we follow in India based on our very own shastras, there are total of 27 constellations which forms 12 zodiac signs, 9 planets and 12 houses. As per the vedic astrology, each house and each planet represents different aspects of human lives. Based on the date and time of our birth, these 12 zodiac signs are arranged in the 12 houses and the 9 planets reside in these 12 houses. The distribution when represented visually is being called a horoscope chart or janampatri or birth chart.
Do you still wonder, what does vedic astrology mean? How does vedic astrology work? Astrology is nothing but a way to study and interpret the meaning of these planetary arrangements in these houses and what are their effects on our lives.
Vedic astrology works and it works scientifically. It all depends on whom do you approach. Which vedic astrologer should I go to?

Science Behind Vedic Astrology
There are several mythological stories regarding our zodiac signs (also known as Nakshatras), planets and constellations. These stories form a basis of our astrological rules. These mythological stories have been used by our ancient sages to simplify some very complex physical laws as they were beyond the comprehension of simple human mind. Ironically, our modern science still has been able to comprehend these physical physical laws. But, we can say that at present, our vedic astrology relies on two branches of mathematics i.e. statistics and probabilities to derive the conclusions. Just like statistics, we try to find the correlation between two or more independent events, without getting into the correlation of causes of those events. It has increasingly been seen that as we put certain astrological rules at work, the correlations that vedic astrologers find and the conclusions they arrived at are true in case of 80%.
Some may argue, this figure is not satisfying or disappointing. That means, astrology doesn’t work. Let us remind those critics, if we put this rule into practice in other branches of science like medicines or sports/athletes, a certain technique and a certain medication if tested on 1000 people, will never give 100% accurate results. The chances of success will vary between 80-90% cases. Hence, astrology is not a farce. It is not a sham. It is real and it works just like any other forms of astrology.
