Makar Sankranti 2022 will fall on Friday, 14th of January. We celebrate this festival with different names in different parts of our country. It is famous as Lohri in Punjab, Uttarayani in Uttarakhand, Uttarayan in Gujarat, and Pongal in Kerala. In some parts of our country people also call this festival ‘Khichdi’.

Makar Sanskranti Importance

Do you know that twelve Sankranti fall in a year? Sun is the lord of all nine planets, and when Sun, with its conventional pace, moves from one zodiac to another, we call this occasion ‘Sankranti’. But why from among all the twelve Sankranti, Makar Sankranti is major? 

This festival celebrates the entry of the Sun into the Capricorn zodiac, and it also marks the end of the winters, with Sun becoming Uttarayan 2022. From the day of this festival, the days become longer and warmer and, the nights become shorter. 

Planet Saturn rules Capricorn, and on the day of Makar Sankranti, father Sun enters into the zodiac of his son Saturn. We also consider this day significant because it is the day of reconciliation of father and son. They reunite as a happy and loving family, leaving behind their rivalry. Rituals of Makar Sankranti

On this day, we clean our house to welcome happiness. We bathe in some holy river and worship Sun by lighting a lamp and reciting the Surya mantra. We also seek His blessings by keeping Ghewar, til laddoos, rice, pulse, turmeric, salt and ghee in front of him.
