Day 1: On the first day of Navratra, the incarnation of Goddess Durga, Shailputri - a Goddess of Mountain is being worshipped. This Goddess was born when Goddess Sati immolate herself to express her anger at the disrespect shown towards her husband, Lord Shiva by her father.

 

Chant this mantra to seek blessings of Maa Shailputri:
वन्दे वाञ्छितलाभाय चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम्। वृषारुढां शूलधरां शैलपुत्रीं यशस्विनीम्॥

 

Day 2: The second day of Navratri belongs to Maa Bharmacharini - it is the meditative state of Goddess Durga where she conjoins with the supreme being and becomes an embodiment of power, divine and spiritual grace. It is in this state, Goddess Parvati did penance for 5000 years in her resolve to get married to Lord Shiva.

दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमालाकमण्डलू। देवी प्रसीदतु मयि ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा॥

 

Day 3: On the third day, Chandraghanta Devi is being worshipped. This is the married version of Goddess Parvati.

 

Chant this mantra to seek blessings of Maa Chandraghanta:
पिण्डज प्रवरारूढ़ा चण्डकोपास्त्रकैर्युता। प्रसीदम तनुते महयं चन्द्रघण्टेति विश्रुता।।


Day 4: On the fourth day of Navratri, we invoke Kushmanda Devi. Often referred as the Smiling Goddess, she is the source of energy to the entire world. She resides in Sun, empowers every single being in the universe and providing guidance to cosmic forces like sun, moon and planets.

 

Chant this mantra to seek blessings of Maa Kushmanda:
वन्दे वांछित कामार्थे चंद्रार्घ्कृत शेखराम, सिंहरुढ़ा अष्टभुजा कुष्मांडा यशस्वनिम.

 

Day 5: Skanda Mata is the fifth incarnation of Goddess Durga, who is often depicted with an infant in one hand. This infant is Lord Kartikeya, another name for ‘Skanda’. The mother of Skanda is Skanda Mata. She is being revered as she became the cause of the death of Tarakasura, who was given a boon only to be killed by the son of Lord Shiva as he believed, Lord Shiva would never get married.

सिंहासनगता नित्यं पद्माश्रितकरद्वया. शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनी.

 

Day 6: The sixth incarnation of Goddess Durga is Katyayni Devi. According to the Legend, Devi Katyayni was born with an aim to kill Demon Mahishasura. She was born with the divine powers of trinity to Sage Katyayen and got the name “Mahishasura Mardini” when she slayed down the demon.

स्वर्णाआज्ञा चक्र स्थितां षष्टम दुर्गा त्रिनेत्राम्। वराभीत करां षगपदधरां कात्यायनसुतां भजामि॥

 

Day 7: The seventh day belongs to Kalratri Devi who was the ferocious form of Goddess Durga. She was given birth to slay down the demons - Shumbh and Nishumbh.

 

Chant this mantra to seek blessings of Maa Kalratri
करालवंदना धोरां मुक्तकेशी चतुर्भुजाम्। कालरात्रिं करालिंका दिव्यां विद्युतमाला विभूषिताम॥

 

Day 8: On the eighth day of Navratri, the fair complexioned Goddess is being worshipped with the name of “Maha Gauri”. Maha Gauri is often revered by young girls wishing to get married with a person of their choice or a man of their dreams.

पूर्णन्दु निभां गौरी सोमचक्रस्थितां अष्टमं महागौरी त्रिनेत्राम्।
वराभीतिकरां त्रिशूल डमरूधरां महागौरी भजेम्॥

 

Day 9: This day, we worship the ninth form of Goddess Durga - Maa Siddhidhatri. She is said to be the other half of Lord Shiva and helped him in creating the Universe. She possesses eight supernatural powers, or the siddhis, called Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakambya, Ishitva and Vashitva. Anima means reducing one's body to the size of an atom; Mahima means expanding one's body to an infinitely large size; Garima means becoming infinitely heavy; Laghima means becoming weightless; Prapti means having omnipresence; Prakambya achieving whatever one desire; Ishitva means possessing absolute lordship; and Vashitva means having the power to subjugate all.

 

Chant this mantra to seek blessings of Maa Siddhidhatri
स्वर्णावर्णा निर्वाणचक्रस्थितां नवम् दुर्गा त्रिनेत्राम्।शख, चक्र, गदा, पदम, धरां सिद्धीदात्री भजेम्॥
